A frog pond?
When the properties in this neighborhood were first developed a water line was run from a waterfall in the Children’s Eternal Rainforest to the fruit packing plant in Chachagua. The property owners in Linda Vista had the option to pay for a 1” water line to their property from the main line. Before the formation of the Chachagua ASADA (water department) this was the only source of water for the property. After the ASADA was formed to provide water to all of Chachagua, the previous source of water was switched to create a frog pond.
Red Eyed Tree Frog (Agalychnis callidryas) calling to attract a female
The frog pond is one of the most popular areas with our Airbnb guests. After our Night Walk many of our guests visit the Frog Pond on their own in the evenings to see what they can discover. In addition to finding the Red Eyed Tree Frog in our frog pond, we also find the Smoky Jungle Frog or Central American Bullfrog (the largest species of frog in Costa Rica), Masked Tree Frogs, a variety of anoles, the occasional basilisk, and freshwater crabs.
Chestnut-mandibled Toucan (Ramphastos swainsonii) enjoying some banana. Take a look at their tongue!
The frog pond is also home to our bird feeding station. The combination of bananas, running fresh water, and thick plant foliage makes this area attractive to everything from hummingbirds to toucans. Dozens of tanagers, euphonia, toucans, woodpeckers, guans, chachalacas, and other species visit the frog pond area every day.
